Third through Fifth Grade Otters to read Sunshine State
                 Young Reader's Award(SSYRA) 2011-12:

Children read a great deal in school; but when they come home, there should be some time set aside for family, relaxation, and reading.

When your child brings home a book, it may have a red book label on the spine binding:  That indicates the book is an Accelerated Reading book.  By looking at the title page, you will find the reading level of the book. That level indicates the grade and month that a student who reads the book may expect to achieve success. If a child is not at a particular level, a parent might want to read the book with the child.  Another number on the title page is a number which indicates the amount of time and level of difficulty of the book.  Online our electronic catalog also shows if a book is best suited for lower grades of 1-4 or middle grades of 4-9. The library also has some books that are UP upper grades of 7-12. A book with a reading level of 3.9 may not be appropriate in content for the lower grades (1-4) even though the child reads at a 4.5 reading level.
If a child is has difficulty with a book, a parent might want to read the book with the child.  Later the child may want to read it by himself or herself - better yet, your child may want to read it to you.

Please take your child to the St. Johns County Public Library so that he or she may sign up for a library card.  Your child will be able to find copies of the SSYRA books and find excellent research materials with a SJCPLS card.  In addition, your student and par will be able to access the county library system from home for various activities such as Tumblebooks and games in the kids section.
