Taking Attendance Seriously in 2009

A minimum of 180 days of school per year is required by Florida law.

Regular school attendance is a necessary part of a child's education. Absenteeism impairs a child's educational progress, impacts whether a child passes or fails, and may result in charges being filed against the parent.

If your child is absent from school, please send a written excuse on the day he or she returns to class. An absence is not marked excused until a note is received in the front office. After 5 unexcused absences, you will be contacted by the attendance clerk. After 10 unexcused absences, you will be contacted by the assistant principal, and you may be asked to attend a meeting concerning your child's absences. After 15 absences, excused or unexcused, you must provide a doctor's note for all subsequent absences. More than 20 absences are presumed to be excessive and the school district will take all appropriate steps to work with a child's family to ensure he or she attends school.

If you wish to send an electronic excuse note, please email your child's teacher, who will forward a copy to the attendance office, or email the attendance clerk directly at  needles@stjohns.k12.fl.us.

Please see the Student Code of Conduct handbook for more information regarding student absences, tardiness and truancy.
