3-5 Sunshine State Young Reader Award Program (SSYRA)
The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) is a program co-sponsored by the Office of Library Media and the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME). Started in 1984 this reading motivation program for students in grades 3-8 is designed to entice students to read high interest, contemporary literature for personal enjoyment. The long term goal of the program is to nurture lifelong readers who will continue to read for information needs and personal pleasure.
Students who have read three or more books are eligible to vote for their favorite book in the spring. At the end of the school year, all votes throughout Florida are collected and one book is declared the winner! Students who have read additional books will be eligible for various incentives including brag tags and Otter Box goodies. In order to be a candidate for our school Battle of the Books team, students must read a minimum of 12 current (SSYRA) books by February 14, 2019. The Battle of the Books team will compete this spring against other schools in St. Johns County. Please note that these books are chosen for students in grades 3 – 5 by the state SSYRA committee. Based on the subject and reading level, some of the books will be better suited for your child than others. You are encouraged to become familiar with the books and select accordingly.
In order to receive incentives for reading SSYRA books, students must pass the required quiz on corresponding books with a score of 70% or higher. Quizzes will be posted for students to take and submit for grading. Students are required to complete books by February 14th so we may prepare for the Battle of the Books round against other county schools.
Students receive prizes for reading the SSYRA books:
3 Books = Vote for your favorite book in April and get your third incentive!
6 Books = Incentive
9 Books = Incentive and Otter Box Prize.
12 Books = Incentive and Otter Box Prize.
15 Books = Incentive, your name will be announced on the morning news show, 8 X 10 photo on the SSYRA Wall of Fame, End of Year SSYRA Celebration.
