3-5 Sunshine State Young Reader Award Program (SSYRA)
The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) is a program co-sponsored by the Office of Library Media and the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME). Started in 1984, this reading motivation program for elementary and middle school students in grades 3-8, is designed to entice students to read high interest, contemporary literature for personal enjoyment. The long term goal of the program is to nurture lifelong readers who will continue to read for information needs and personal pleasure.
Students who have read three or more books* are eligible to vote for their favorite book in the spring. At the end of the school year, all votes throughout Florida are collected and one book is declared the winner! Students who have read additional books will be eligible for various incentives including brag tags and Otter Box goodies. In order to be a candidate for our school Battle of the Books team, students must read a minimum of 12 current (SSYRA) books*. The Battle of the Books team will compete against other schools in St. Johns County. Please note that these books are chosen for students in grades 3 – 5 by the state SSYRA state committee* based on the subject and reading level.
Testing and Quzzing Book Content on Book Taco
In order to receive incentives for reading SSYRA books, students must pass the required quiz on corresponding books with a score of 70% or higher, this year on Book Taco. Quizzes will be posted for students to take and submit for grading. Students are required to complete the quizzes prior to the reading deadline to prepare for the Battle of the Books team selections and the competition against other county schools.
